Cabbage cultivation in 1 acre requires seed rate of 300gm – 500 gm/ acre. Duration of cabbage crop is 60 to 100 days. However, it is mostly 60 to 80 days. Cabbage crop can yield up to 14,000 to 15,000 kg cabbage heads per acre. The average price farmer can get is Rs. 10/ kg cabbage at the nearest vegetable markets as on 28.08.2019.

Cost of Cabbage Farming in India

Land preparation cost in cabbage farming:

Land preparation includes deep 2 – 3 ploughing before sowing. Four meter nursery seed bed preparation and raising cabbage seedlings that is enough for 1 acre sowing. To carry out all these operations in cabbage farm land preparation, it may incur up to Rs. 5000 for the cabbage farmer.

The cost of cabbage seeds:

The required seed rate for cabbage crop sowing on seed bed is 500 gm cabbage seeds for 1 acre area. The cost of 500 gm cabbage seeds is Rs. 1,000 for good and high yield cabbage varieties. The farmer can purchase the hybrid varities from the local seed dealers or else they can contact the nearest regional agriculture research station (RARS) or Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) for quality Cabbage seed purchase. Seeds are selected based on the type of soil and climatic as well as environmental conditions of the area.

Pesticides cost in Cabbage farming:

To control major insect pests like Diamond black moth, cut worms and other insect pests of cabbage, spray Acephate 1.5 gm/ lt water, Spinosad 0.3 ml/ lt water at 15 days intervals. To control diseases like damping off, black rot and club root, spray fungicides like Copper Oxy Chloride (COC) @3gm/ lt water. All these pesticides cost up to Rs. 1500 for spraying over 1 acre cabbage field.

Cabbage cultivation fertilizers cost:

Apply 10 tons of FYM before sowing. NPK @ 25: 30:40 kg for 1 acre cabbage crop. Apply the fertilizers in split doses based on the recommendations for the cabbage crop. These fertilizers may cost up to Rs. 1300. Most times the farmer can avil subsidies while purchasing fertilizers.

The cost of labor in 1 acre cabbage cultivation:

Cabbage crop requires a period of 4 months approximately. We require two labors for every week to carry out the inter cultural operations and irrigation activites and spraying. For 16 weeks, we require 32 labors on average. The cost of individual labor per day is Rs. 250. Then, the total labor cost in 1 acre cabbage crop cultivation is  Rs. 250 X 32 = Rs.8,000 approximately.

The cost of miscellaneous activities:

Miscellaneous costs include the irrigation cost, rental value of hired equipment for farm management practices and additional labor costs, etc., This may incur up to Rs. 4,000 for whole cabbage crop duration.

Harvesting cost in 1 acre cabbage farming:

Harvesting is done in 2 to 3 days after completion of duration or noticing the cabbage heads maturity. It incurs about Rs. 3,500 for harvesting 1care cabbage and packing them into crates for transportation.

 The cost of marketing:

Marketing of cabbage heads are mostly sold at the nearest vegetable markets. They are transported by packing them into moist jute bags to keep them fresh for more time.This may incur up to Rs. 2,000. Sometimes, some vegetable procurement agencies may also procure them directly from the cabbage farmer’s field which is a time and money saving task for the cabbage farmers.

Land preparation cost in cabbage farming : Rs. 5,000

Cost of cabbage seeds : Rs. 1,000

Pesticides cost in Cabbage farming : Rs. 1,500

Cabbage cultivation fertilizers cost : Rs. 1,300

Cost of labor in 1 acre cabbage cultivation: Rs. 8,000

Cost of miscellaneous activities:  Rs. 4,000

Harvesting cost in 1 acre cabbage farming: Rs. 3,500

Cost of marketing 1 acre cabbage heads: Rs. 2,000

10% of total cost: Rs. 2,700

Total cost of 1 acre cabbage cultivation: Rs. 29,000

Therefore, the total cost of 1 acre cabbage cultivation in India is Rs. 29,000 approximately.

Income returns in 1 acre cabbage cultivation

The cabbage farmer can get yield up to 14,000 kg/ acre. The average selling price of cabbage in the regional vegetable market is Rs. 10/ kg as on 28.08.2019. Therefore, Rs. 10 X 14,000 kg = Rs. 1,40,000. However, the rental cost of the land is to be included for the farmers who do cabbage cultivation in the rental agricultural land. This may vary from place to place and region to region.

Profits from 1 acre cabbage farming

Profits are the difference of the total cost of 1 acre cabbage farming and income returns from 1 acre cabbage farming. It is Rs. 1,40,000 – Rs. 29,000 = Rs. 1,11,000.

Therefore, a farmer can earn up to Rs. 1.1 lakh approximately in a period of 4 months if they go for cabbage cultivation with proper care and management in the cabbage crop. It is also advisable to go for crop rotation with other crop always once in a year at least.
