How To Build The Garden Of Your Dreams

If you’ve always dreamed of turning your garden into your own personal oasis, now is the time to get started. After all, the longer you put this off, the further away that dream will feel. Furthermore, upgrading your garden will:

  • Add value to your home and property
  • Improve your home’s curb and visual appeal
  • Encourage you to spend more time outdoors
  • Better your mental and physical health
  • Turn your yard into a functional space for both socializing or relaxing
  • Give you the opportunity to grow your own fruit and veg

With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can follow to make the garden of your dreams a reality.

Have a clear vision in mind. The first step toward any kind of home makeover is consolidating your vision. For example, if you were decorating your bedroom, you wouldn’t start buying decor or picking up a paintbrush without having a clear image in mind for how you’d like the space to look. As such, you should make sure you have a clear idea in your mind (and on paper) for how you want your garden to look. This will allow you to make effective use of both the space you have available to you and your budget.

Make use of the space you have available to you. While your dream garden may be several acres in size, the chances are that you’re working with a much more limited space. However, this does not mean that you cannot make the most of the space that you do have. For example, you can make a terrace garden look bigger by planting vertically, or by painting fences and wall trellises white.

Invest in gardening tools and supplies. Your garden is constantly growing and full of life. This means that it will soon become an ongoing project that you must work on each week to keep it looking its best. For this reason, investing in gardening tools and supplies is highly advised. This way, you can stay on top of upkeep and address maintenance issues promptly, before they become too time-consuming or complicated to handle. For example, you should consider buying a push mower to keep your lawn looking its best.

Learn new gardening techniques. Whether you are a novice green thumb or are no stranger to getting your hands dirty, learning new gardening techniques ahead of time can only be a good thing. After all, it means you’ll become a more efficient and skilled gardener, promising better results overall. For example, now is the perfect time to learn how to master the seeding square method.

However, it’s often best to start simple when it comes to transforming your garden, such as by focusing primarily on low-maintenance plants and flowers. This will allow you to build a strong ‘foundation’, and you can always add more complex greenery over time.

Remember, taking care of a garden is a big commitment, so don’t make it an impossible task from the word go, especially if you know that you’re not the best at staying on top of gardening tasks. If you don’t have time to keep your garden looking its best, now is also a great time to reach out to a regular gardener who will be willing to carry out this work on your behalf. This way, you can enjoy your time in the space as opposed to feeling as though you should be working on it.

Make your own compost. Fertilisers are great tools when it comes to helping your garden thrive. Without them, certain plants and flowers may struggle to flourish, leaving your garden looking a little lacklustre. However, they can sometimes contain harsh chemicals that harm both your garden and the planet, which means that you should seek out alternatives wherever possible. For example, you could start by learning how to make mushroom compost at home. This can also help you save a lot of money over time.

Split your garden into sections. Splitting your garden up into different sections is a great way to make sure you’re using every inch of space as wisely as possible, while also creating a space that looks cohesive as opposed to cluttered. For example, you may want to set up a space for entertaining guests, then a separate area for growing plants and flowers.

Don’t be afraid to splurge on statement outdoor features. Building the garden of your dreams means actualising your fantasies (or doing so as much as you possibly can).  As such, don’t feel as though you have to hold yourself back when it comes to investing in your outdoor space, especially if you’ve always dreamed of having access to certain fixtures or amenities.

For example, if you genuinely believe that you’ll get good use out of a pool or hot tub, try to make it happen. Alternatively, you may want to invest in eye-catching, statement decor, such as a statue or water feature. Be as creative as you can, all while ensuring that the space reflects your style and personality as much as possible.

Final thoughts. Your garden of your dreams does not have to stay in your dreams – no matter the current state of your backyard or terrace. In fact, there are plenty of ways in which you can set about turning your dream into a reality, from being willing to invest in decor and amenities with the ‘WOW’ factor, to buying the tools you need to keep your garden looking its best all year round.

While you may feel as though you’ve got a huge job ahead of you, the sooner you get started, the sooner you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. As such, there is truly no time like the present, especially as the sun is shining.

  1. This is a really helpful guide for anyone starting their dream garden! One small addition I’d suggest from experience — having a reliable water source makes a huge difference. We recently started using a petrol water pump for agriculture in our garden and it’s made irrigation much easier, especially in areas without direct electric supply. Highly recommended for larger garden spaces!
