Spirulina Training Centers and Programs in India

Today, we are here to know about spirulina training programs in India.

Introduction to Spirulina:

What is Spirulina? Spirulina is a micro-cyanobacterium with high-value bio-chemical constituents, Spirulina application benefits in areas like health foods and therapeutics, especially for its high protein content. The Spirulina protein is superior when compared to legumes and milk protein, as it contains many essential amino acids. It is composed of important chemical composition and fast rate of multiplicity, alga has attained the status of the commercial enterprise. Spirulina species are grown commercially all over the world for its high contents of protein (up to 70%), pigments (phycocyanin), essential fatty acids (linolenic acid), Vitamin B12 and minerals. Spirulina was first time harvested from the Lake Texcoco, dried and used for human consumption in a Tenochtitlán (Mexico City) market. Mass cultivation Spirulina species depends on many factors like nutrients medium, temperature ( surrounding and culture) light intensity, light period (D:N), hygiene and most important agitation.

Spirulina reproduces by mean of fragmentation. In this process intercalary cell or sacrificial cell (necridium), or lysing cell act as unique specialized cells, allowing the transcellular breakup of a trichome, leading to the formation of shorter segments i.e. harmogonia, which undergoes enlargement and maturation processes following a developmental cycle Balloni and redrawn. Environmental factors, mainly temperature, physical and chemical conditions can affect the helix geometry.

Cultivation of Spirulina:

Spirulina could not be cultivated through the year in the semi-arid climatic conditions of India because of huge changes in the climate throughout the year. But by controlling certain physical growth regulating factors such as light intensity, temperature, and precipitation we can cultivate Spirulina throughout the year.  In algal culture, a certain amount of agitation and optimum range of pH for the plant are also required. In Spirulina most rapid and abundant growth is achieved when the temperature ranged between 34-40˚C the cultures were densely populated when the pH was around 9.5. The presence of essential growth elements are water in sufficient quantity and regular agitation lead to the well optimum biomass production.  During the outdoor cultivation of Spirulina maxima, the majority of the chances of contamination occur. Certain kind of contamination in outdoor algal cultures is unavoidable in view of the non-aseptic conditions of cultivation, where neither the medium nor the surroundings were sterile. It is compulsory to observe culture day to day to control the contaminants to obtain algal biomass without harmful impurities and to keep the contaminants within tolerable limits. The present study deals with monthly variations of cellular metabolites of Spirulina maxima Geitler cultivated under semi-arid climatic conditions of India.

Suitable Temperature Spirulina Cultivation:

Temperature is one of the important factors that are necessary for the growth of Spirulina culture. Spirulina does not grow significantly in open tanks, resulting in lower yields (Richmond, 1992) because in winter the temperature below 15°c is not suitable to grow Spirulina. Light intensity is another parameter that affects the outdoor cultivation since they are largely variable in the natural environment.

The secret of multi-facet benefits of Spirulina lies in the fact that it is rich in nutrient contents in its cellular composition. Spirulina is photoautotrophic alga so light affects its growth and there is also a huge chance of change in metabolite production. Temperature is the most important climatic factor influencing the growth rate of Spirulina. The growth of spirulina in temperature Below 20°C is practically nil, but Spirulina does not die.

Spirulina Production in India:

Spirulina Production can be a successful business initiative, you can start a small scale unit with minimum labor having 50- 40 Spirulina production tanks. This unit can produce about  150kg to 160 kg of Spirulina per month.

Spirulina has very high micronutrient content that can be produced locally. Spirulina production is effectively combated malnutrition and simultaneously provides business opportunities for locals, mainly women.

Spirulina production cycle is 14 days. Spirulina production in 1 acre can produce an income of more than 1 lakh monthly after an investment of 2 lakh in a spirulina farm.

So, for a successful Spirulina cultivation, it is recommended to undergo special training. There are many institutes that offer Training for Commercial Spirulina Production.
