India is the top producer country of several crops. Based on the seasons, the classification of crops in India has been divided into three types. They are;

  • Rabi
  • Kharif and
  • Zaid crops

Rabi crops: 

The Rabi crop is the spring harvest or winter season crop in India. It is sown in October last and harvested in March and April every year. The Rabi season generally starts in November and lasts up to March or April. Rabi crops are mostly cultivated using irrigation since monsoons are already over by November. Unseasonal showers in the month November or December can ruin the crops. Most important Rabi crops in India include Wheat, Barley, Mustard, Sesame, Peas, etc.

Kharif crops:

The Kharif crop is the summer or monsoon crop in India. Kharif crops also known as monsoon crops. The crops that are cultivated in the monsoon season. The Kharif season differs in every state of the country but is normally from June to September. These crops are generally sown at the beginning of the monsoon season around June and harvested by September or October. Major Kharif crops of India includes Millets (Bajra & Jowar), Cotton, Soyabean, Sugarcane, Paddy or Rice, Maize, Pulses, Groundnut, Red Chillies, etc.

Zaid crops:

These Zaid crops are grown in some parts of the country from March to June. There is a short season between Kharif season and Rabi season in March to July. These Zaid crops are grown on irrigated lands and do not have to wait for monsoons.

Prominent examples of major Zaid crops of India are Muskmelon, Watermelon, Vegetables of Cucurbitaceae family such as bitter gourd, pumpkin, cucumber, ridged gourd, etc.

Rice:

Rice is predominantly a Kharif crop. It normally covers one-third of the total cultivated area of India. It gives food to more than half of the Indian population. Rice is formed in almost all states. Top three rice producer states are West Bengal, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Other rice-growing states can include Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, and Maharashtra.

India is the 2nd largest producer of rice in the world after China. India accounts for about 20% of the world’s rice production. It is arguably the main important agricultural crop that grows in the country. Rice is a staple food pan India, and its cultivation is widespread across the country.

Rice importantly grows in high rainfall areas. It requires average temperatures range of 25°c and a minimum of 100 cms of rainfall. It’s traditionally developed in waterlogged rice paddy fields. Northeast plains and coastal areas are the main rice-producing areas of the country.

Wheat:

Wheat is the second main important crop of India after Rice. Wheat is a Rabi crop. Wheat is the staple food in north and northwestern India. It’s a winter crop and requires low temperature. The ideal temperature for wheat cultivation is between 10 to 15°C at the time of sowing and 21-26°C at the time of harvesting. Wheat thrives well in less than 100 cm and more than 75 cm rainfall. The most proper soil for the cultivation of wheat is well-drained fertile loamy soil and clayey soil. Plain areas are mainly suitable. The wheat crop is highly mechanization oriented and can needless labor. Top three states producing Wheat are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana.

Maize

After rice and wheat, maize is the mainly important cereal crop in India. It accounts for about one-tenth of the total agricultural produce in India. Cultivation of maize is mainly in the regions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It requires temperatures in the range of 21 to 27°c and rainfall of between 50 to 75 cms.

Mustard

Mustard belongs to the ‘Cruciferae’ family and is generally used in India for cooking purposes.  Also, mustard is used to extract oil, which is edible and is mostly used in Indian cooking. It needs a subtropical climate to grow which is a dry and cool climate. The temperature range to grow mustard is between 10 to 25°c. Rajasthan has the largest production of mustard in India.

Coarse Cereals and Millets

Coarse Cereals and Millets are the short duration warm weather or Kharif crops used both as food and fodder. Important millets in India are Jawar, Bajra, Ragi, etc. The coarse cereals and millets are grown in areas with high temperature and are known as dryland crops because can be grown in areas with 50-100 cm rainfall.  The coarse cereals are less sensitive to soil deficiencies. They can be mostly grown in an inferior alluvial or loamy soil.

Cotton:

Cotton is the most important fiber crop and cotton seed is used as vegetable oil and a part of fodder for milch cattle for better milk production. Cotton is a Kharif Crop and develops in tropical and subtropical areas. It requires modest rainfall and in India, it is one of the predominant rain-fed crops. Cotton requires uniformly high-temperature ranges 21°C to 30°C. Cotton grows in areas having at least 210 frost-free days in a year.

    I got a approx 4 acre wetland can be used only for Agri in Cochin kerala,I had studied a hydroponics (but dropped the idea due to initial cost, could you help me with any loss cost modern type of farming technique..

    Thanks for the info. I wanted to know which crop is most profitable in UP(Uttar Pradesh) soil. The land has black soil. Also, it is capable to produce 3 crops in a year. I am very much interested in farming. People are willing to give their land on rent. So, there’s no limit to land.

    I am from haryana, i wanted to know which is the fastest and costliest plant that i can grow in my farm land, i just sow Kashmiri apple ber and Taiwan white guava in three acres, we used to plant popular in our field but i want more to grow profitable plants or herbs, please suggest, in our field the eater level is just on four feet, an fertile land too.
