The soil requirement for Tamarind plantation

The best thing we can observe in the tamarind plantation is it can be grown well in poor soils also. Deep loam and alluvial soils are ideal for its growth and best yield. Tamarind can be cultivated in the soil with pH ranging from 4.5 to 9.0.

Planting methods for Tamarind crop

Tamarind can be propagated through seeds, grafts, and buddings. Seeds take nearly 1 week to 10 days to germinate. These seedlings are allowed to grow up to 3-4 months and then transplanted to the main field. In recent times, softwood grafting is very successful and gave the best yield. The ideal time for planting the Tamarind plantation is from June to November. Pits are prepared with 1x1x1 and are maintained at a distance of 10 meteres x10 meters. 15-20 Kg of FYM is added to each it along with the topsoil. Irrigate the planted seedlings from time to time to establish the plants in the field.

Manures and Fertilizers required for Tamarind plants

The fully decomposed cow dung or any organic manure yields better results than any other chemical fertilizer. This is added to the soil after forming the pits.

How to carry out irrigation in Tamarind orchard

It requires frequent irrigation during the summer season, in the rainy season it doesn’t require
any water. Care should be taken to drain off the water stagnation. The beginning stage of the plantation requires water in a steady state. The excess water should be removed during this stage.

How to control weeds in Tamrind orchard

This can be achieved by plowing field more than thrice to attain fine tilth in the soil during this the weeds are ploughed and are separated at the end. Mulching is also done, which helps to control the growth of weeds and also helps to retain the soil moisture content.

How and when to harvest Tamarind

Tamarind fruits are harvested either in the raw state which is used in pickles and consumed raw due to their sour taste these also have good market value. The other one is completely ripening which gives sweet and sour taste this has high demand in local and international markets as it can be transported as a paste to other countries. Not only fruits the tender leaves and the seeds along with the wood also have high demand in the markets as these plant products are used for multipurpose. Harvesting can be done by handpicking or beating with a stick is into practice till now. If the plants are grown by using seeds then the yield starts in the 8th year; if they are developed through grafts then the yield can be seen from the 4th year onwards.

The yield of Tamarind plantation in 1 acre of land

On average it yields 8-10 tons per acre, this yield can be attained if a farmer follows good farming practices; per tree, it yields about 250-300 Kg.

The costs involved in Tamarind cultivation per 1 acre

Land preparation = Rs. 5,000

Planting materials = Rs. 10,000

Manures = Rs. 5,000

Fertilizers= Rs. 3,000

Plant protection = Rs. 5,000

Irrigation = Rs. 5,000

Labour Charges = Rs. 15,000

Miscellaneous cost = Rs. 5,000

Packaging materials = Rs. 3,000

10% of total cost = Rs. 5,600

Total cost for 1 year = Rs. 61,600

As the yield starts from 4th year, the rest three year’s cost should also be added = Rs. 1,86,000. So total costs involved for 4 years = Rs. 2,47,600

The Tamrind cultivation income returns from one acre plantation

Farm gate price of 1 Kg of Tamarind fruit = Rs. 80 per Kg, which is purely based on the variety of Tamarind crops which the farmer has chosen.

For 1 ton the Farm gate price = 80 x 1000 = Rs. 80,000 per ton. So the income for the average yield of 15 tons = 8 x 80,000 = Rs. 6,40,000

The profits on Tamarind cultivation in 1 acre

Profit = Income – costs involved = Rs.6,40,000 – Rs.2,47,600 = Rs. 3,92,400. Hence the profit is Rs. 3,92,400 per 1 acre.

These profits are earned after the 4th year and the profits can be increased as the seed, tender leaves, gum produced, wood is also having high market value. Hence, the profits of these products will also be included in the profits section. Hope you enjoyed the article of Tamrind cultivation income and cost of cultivation. Happy farming!.
